Practical and Emotional Ways to offer Support for Someone Diagnosed with Cancer

When someone is diagnosed with cancer, their needs can be diverse and ongoing. Here are some practical and emotional ways you can offer support:

Emotional Support

  • Keep in Touch: Regular contact through cards, phone calls, or visits can be incredibly comforting. Let them know it's okay if they don't want to talk or see visitors at times.

  • Listen: Sometimes, all they need is someone to listen. Give them time to talk and avoid interrupting or offering unsolicited advice.

  • Be Present: Your presence can help them feel less isolated. Spend time doing activities they enjoy, like watching TV, going for a walk, or simply being there.

Practical Help

  • Ask "When" instead of "What": Instead of saying "Let me know what you need", offer specific help like "When can I do your grocery shopping?" or "Can I take the kids to school on Friday?" This makes it easier for them to accept help.

  • Organise a Community Roster: Set up a roster for tasks like meal preparation, transportation, shopping, and childcare. This can be done using online tools to coordinate efforts among friends and family.

  • Help with Meals: Prepare ready-made or freezable meals to save them time and effort, especially when they may be experiencing nausea or fatigue.

  • Transportation and Appointments: Offer to drive them to and from doctors' appointments and treatments.

Household and Family Support

  • Childcare: Help with childcare by looking after the children after school, overnight, or on weekends. This can be a significant relief during treatment.

  • Household Chores: Assist with housework, gardening, or pet are. These tasks can be overwhelming when someone is undergoing treatment.

  • Support the Caregiver: Don't forget the partner or caregiver, who may also be struggling. Offer them emotional support and help with their tasks to alleviate some of their burden.

Financial Support

  • Financial Assistance: Cancer treatment can be costly. Help manager expenses such as hospital parking, petrol, accomodation and childcare. Consider organising local fundraisers or events to support them financially.

Specific Tasks

  • Errands and Shopping: Run errands, buy groceries, and help with other regular tasks that may become challenging for them.

  • Gardening and Lawn Care: Take care of their lawn or garden to maintain their home environment.

  • Personal Care Items: Other practical items like soft socks, fun hats, or self-care products that can make their life more comfortable.

Acceptance and Inclusion

  • Meet Them Where They Are: Approach the situation with empathy and understanding, avoiding overly positive or dismissive attitudes. Help them work towards acceptance of their diagnosis.

  • Include Them in Activities: Continue to invite them to social gathering and activities, even if they may not always be able to participate. This helps them feel included and valued.

By providing a mix of emotional support, practical help, and understanding, you can make a significant difference in the life of someone diagnosed with cancer.
